Organ donation

Organ donation

Around 9,200 people in Germany are currently on the waiting list for an organ transplant. By 2020, only just over 900 people will have donated organs after their death. A new special postage stamp issued by the Federal Republic of Germany draws attention to this situation.

Anyone can find themselves in a situation where survival is only possible with an organ transplant. On the other hand, anyone can find themselves in a situation where they have to make a decision about the possible donation of a deceased relative’s organs because they did not make a decision during their lifetime.

It is important to think about your willingness to donate while you are still alive and to make a decision for or against organ donation. It is also important to discuss this decision with your loved ones so that there is no confusion if the worst comes to the worst. Make active use of your right to decide and remember to document your decision, ideally on an organ donor card.

The new special-issue stamp, with a face value of 85 cents, brings organ donation into the public eye. A colourful illustration portrays it in a positive and accessible way. The two special first-day postmarks for Bonn and Berlin complement the visual language of the special-issue stamp.
