Whether computer games, food allergies, Joseph Beuys or the food of the future - the MAGAZIN is as diverse as the Heinrich Heine University Düsseldorf itself. Each issue highlights the latest scientific findings.

HHU Düsseldorf is a thriving university with around 34,000 students, over 2,000 lecturers and more than 1,500 employees. The 89 degree programmes offered by the five faculties are a source of constant innovation. Three times a year, the magazine is the stage for innovations in teaching and research. Using journalistic means and modern communication design, complex scientific content is conveyed in an understandable and vivid way.

“The MAGAZIN of Heinrich Heine University Düsseldorf is an important communication medium that aims to have an impact both internally and externally. It is distributed not only within the university, but also to decision-makers and key players in state and federal ministries, administrations, other universities and, last but not least, the city of Düsseldorf itself. With the relaunch, the design of the magazine has become much more important. The positive reactions show that the effort that the editors and graphic designers put into each issue is worth it!”
— Dr. Victoria Meinschäfer, Chefredakteurin

An individual visual language is created for each article, which serves as a gateway to the content. Historical illustrations, documentary photos and press photographs are used to open up new perspectives through unusual forms of use, while avoiding tired stereotypes. In addition, completely new worlds of illustration are created for many articles. Illustrations and infographics developed especially for the magazine visualise the key findings of scientific research and invite readers to engage with the diverse topics.

In 2019, the magazine has been completely revised and adapted to the current corporate design of HHU Düsseldorf. A flexible design grid allows a playful approach to layouts, which can be expansive or compact. Even when different image formats and typographic styles are used, the design concept of the magazine is so strong that the overall look is always consistent and highly recognisable.
